Whales in Costa Rica

Many whales pass through Costa Rican marines all over the year to mate, produce offspring, and nurture them before getting back to the colder waters.

Most Common Whales in Costa Rica

Humpback whales, killer whales, pilot whales, sperm whales and also dolphins can easily be seen in the Costa Rican waters. Here are two of the most commonly found whales there.

Humpback Whales

Humpback whales are the most abundantly found whales in Costa Rica. These whales stay in the marines of Costa Rica for more than half a year. These whales come from Antarctica in the winters (from August to October). These whales have a distinguishing hump and are about 12 to 16 meters long. They love to float on the surface and closer to the shore, making them easily visible all the time. So, while on your trip to Costa Rica, there are pretty strong chances that you see the humpbacks playing in the waters.

Pilot Whales

The pilot whales are identified as the second largest ocean dolphin. Swimming through the wide waters, a large number of pilot whales stay in Costa Rican territory, and lucky tourists can catch a glimpse of this whale as well.

Watching Whales in Costa Rica

These beautiful creatures are fun to watch and tourists from all over the world hit specific Costa Rican spots to watch fun activities of whales. The Dome, North Pacific, Gulf of Papagayo, Uvita, and the Osa Peninsula are a few of the most common spots to watch whales in Costa Rica. Best time to watch whale is considered to be between August to April, but if this doesn’t match your schedule, then you’ll still an incredibly amazing variety of dolphins, sea turtles, and many other beautiful creatures of marine life.

One extremely important thing is to follow the laws. The government has very strict rules about these whale watching tours. For the protection of these animals and to keep the environment safe for everyone, it is not allowed to swim with the whales, and only scientific researchers can do so, after permission.
